Helping Kids Grow Spiritually: Spring Lessons on Spirit, Soul & Body
Spring is a wonderful time to talk about growth. Seeds wake up, flowers stretch toward the sun, and the whole world seems to say, “Time to grow!”
Spring is also a beautiful way to help children understand something important about how God made them.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:23, we are reminded that God cares about every part of us — our spirit, soul, and body.
That can sound like big language for little kids. But when we explain it with pictures that they already understand, it becomes simple.
Think of a child like a little spring garden.
The body is like the soil. It needs food, sleep, movement, and sunshine so it can grow strong.
The soul is like the flowers. It holds our thoughts, feelings, creativity, and imagination.
The spirit is like the roots that grow deep underground and connect us to God.
Roots are hidden, but they are the most important part of the plant. Without healthy roots, the flowers cannot grow well.
Children are the same way.
When a child learns how to care for their spirit, they learn how to stay connected to Jesus — who is the source of peace, courage, and joy.
Helping Kids Understand Their Spirit
Children don’t need complicated explanations. Sometimes it can be as simple as saying:
Your body helps you run, jump, and hug people.
Your soul is where your thoughts and feelings live.
Your spirit is the part of you that talks with Jesus.
When children understand this, they begin to realize something very important: taking care of their spirit helps everything else grow.
Children remember stories much more easily than lessons. That’s one of the reasons I created Polly and Purdee Penguin.
Polly is a brave little girl learning how to handle big feelings and big truths. Purdee Penguin — who happens to wear pearls and loves to say “Woot! Woot!” — gently helps Polly remember God’s truth.
Through their adventures, children learn how to talk to Jesus, remember God’s truth when feelings feel big, along with choosing courage instead of fear and understanding who God says they are!
In other words, Polly and Purdee help children learn how to care for their spirit.
Just like a garden needs water and sunshine, a child’s spirit grows through simple daily habits every day.
Parents and grandparents! You can help children learn to:
- talk to Jesus through prayer
- listen to Bible stories
- sing and worship
- practice gratitude
- pause and listen for God’s voice
These small moments become strong roots in a child’s life.
Spring reminds us that growth often begins quietly. Roots grow before flowers appear.
When we help children learn to care for their spirit, we are planting something eternal inside their hearts. Over time, those roots produce courage, peace, kindness, and joy.
And sometimes, a cheerful penguin named Purdee may appear with a helpful reminder:
“Woot! Woot! Check the roots!”
